Difference between Electronic Portfolios (E-Portfolio) and Assessment Management Systems

The two terms can cause confusion. The two terms refer to different kinds of system that do have some overlap. An Electronic Portfolio has many purposes that encompas learning and assessment, compared to an assessment management system which has a single purpose of managing assessment only. The overlap is that an electronic portfolio management system often includes facilities for managing assessment however this is limited to the management of assessment relating to electronic portfolios.

An electronic portfolio is a submission of assessible work completed by a student that in most cases would be possible to submit as an actual printed work. An assessment management system however does not in any way handle the actual work of a student and rather focuses on managing the outcome of the assessment process that the teacher/tutor/lecturer performs.

aPlus+ is an assessment management system and as such is independent to other e-learning systems that a customer may use. aPlus+ can be run in conjunction with those systems to provide the specialist assessment management support that our customers enjoy.
